How to compare investment performance across currencies

Compare multi-currency investment performance by choosing a reporting currency and valuation convention, converting dated values and cash flows with documented rates, and separating local-asset return from currency translation. Do not compare raw gains across currencies or mix time-weighted and money-weighted methods.

From the field · Small portfolio manager

Compare a USD account with EUR and INR holdings

The portfolio receives a mid-month deposit, owns assets in three currencies, and records dividends and fees separately. Closing value is higher, but part of the increase comes from cash flow and a stronger euro.

Columns used in the example

account · valuation_date · instrument · local_value · currency · cash_flow · income · fee · fx_rate

Follow it with your own file

  1. Select USD reporting currency and a consistent closing-rate convention.
  2. Convert valuations and cash flows on approved dates while preserving local values.
  3. Calculate local investment movement and currency translation separately.
  4. Build an opening-to-closing bridge and report the chosen return method.

Check: The translated components must reconcile to closing value, all rate dates and sources must be traceable, and cash flows must be excluded or handled according to the selected performance method.

Where to look for exceptions

  • Portfolio growth is calculated from opening and closing value without cash-flow adjustment.
  • One current exchange rate is applied to the entire history.
  • Returns from different methods are compared as if equivalent.

The decision hiding in the data

A foreign holding can rise in local currency while falling in the investor's reporting currency. Deposits and withdrawals also change portfolio value without representing investment performance.

Currency is part of the economic explanation

Conversion is not a formatting step. Rate source, timestamp, cash-flow timing, and reporting perspective alter the result. Showing local and reporting-currency views prevents exchange movement from being mistaken for manager skill or asset performance.

Where this usually goes wrong

This workflow supports data preparation and explanation, not investment advice. Corporate actions, tax lots, derivatives, and formal performance standards may require specialist systems and review.

Before touching the file

  • Document reporting currency, valuation time, rate source, and performance method.
  • Convert valuations and external cash flows using the approved date convention.
  • Report local market movement, income, fees, cash flows, and currency translation distinctly.
  • Connect opening value through all components to closing value with an explicit remainder.

Build the result step by step

  1. Choose the reporting basis: Document reporting currency, valuation time, rate source, and performance method.
  2. Align dated values: Convert valuations and external cash flows using the approved date convention.
  3. Separate effects: Report local market movement, income, fees, cash flows, and currency translation distinctly.
  4. Reconcile the bridge: Connect opening value through all components to closing value with an explicit remainder.

Before the result leaves your desk

  • Reporting currency selected
  • Rate source and dates documented
  • Cash flows separated
  • Performance method named
  • Opening-to-closing bridge reconciled

Doing these steps in Prepyr

Prepyr accepts CSV files only. Export the worksheet or table you need as a UTF-8 CSV first; workbook formulas, formatting, macros, charts, and other sheets will not be included. Describe the result you need: Compare investment returns and value across local and reporting currencies. Check the columns selected, preview any proposed changes, and compare the output with the source before applying or exporting it.

Prepyr steps used here: Data reconciliation · Version history · Verified analysis · Report generation

A portfolio comparison that shows what came from assets, currency, income, fees, and investor cash flows under one reproducible reporting basis.

Questions readers usually ask next

Should I use today's exchange rate for historical performance?

No. Use the documented rate convention appropriate to each valuation and cash-flow date.

Why can local and reporting-currency returns differ?

The exchange rate between the asset currency and reporting currency changes the translated value independently of local asset movement.
